I have G4 1.25 GHz ‘mirrored’ dual. My monitor died on me. Want to purchase Apple’s 20″ monitor and was told by Apple people that my best bet would be to purchase NVIDIA GeForce 6800 ultra card with it. That way I would have the best card available for this computer and G5 2.7 GHz dual when I purchase in few months. It would serve best also for using it for Motion.
Does that make sense since usually the same card is not optimally compatible with the other computer.

    Thanks

6800 takes up 2 slots and has 2 DVI connectors. Look for an older ULTRA as it is a tad faster than the current GT.

Try going to ATI’s website and look under refurbished. They have the x800’s on sale with 3 yr warranty. If you need a specific “Mac” card then the x800xt is definately better than the Nvidia. I spent a lot of time researching these cards and the tests definately show ATI way ahead. I just bought the x800xt for around 300! If you are interested, I can find my receipt and get you the website and exact price details. Good luck.

Thank you for info. I checked out your recommendation to get ATI Radeon X800XT Mac Edition (256MB, AGP 8x)instead of NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra. ATI website says that it is for G5s. Will this card work on my current G4 1.25 GHz dual processor (mirrored) and will it work with 20″ or 23″ Apples’s flat screens that I will purchase?
If this card will work for my current computer and the latest G5 I intend to purchase at the end of the year, then this is great. I found the price for it $355 at Comp-U-Plus.

    Please let me know.

    Thanks for your help

x800 for G5 only. Have heard from some folks that the new 9600 w/256MB VRAM performs slightly better than the older 9800 Pro, but I can’t say for sure.

If you are planning on upgrading to a G5 later, get an inexpensive card now and trade up to the x850 later. ATI is currently giving a US$50 rebate on trade-in video cards so I might be upgrading my G5s to the x850 and will have some 9800 Pros available.

    Appreciate your info.

That’s a thought since Radeon 9600 Pro cards nowhere around and apparently won’t get on the market, as per ATi,for another month or so.
Good thing about 9600 is that it supports also G5 and Apple’s 30″ dislay.

    Hi,

Just wondering how does your G4 perform with the ATI Radeon 9600 Pro card?

I was thinking of getting Motion earlier with one of the card but further researched on the web a couple of months ago, tells me that it is rather slow and it is better getting the G5 to go with it, the card they recommended at that time was ATI Radeon 9800 128 VRAM.

I am talking about general performance of only like 2 to 3 lsayers, simple animation with text and images not intensive work like paticle generation, is the performance satisfactory for your G4?

Wanted to get G5 but my budget would not allow it till next year, was thinking of interim sloution to get the best out of my good ole G4.

    Please advise

    Thanks

9600 card seems to be slow as I use it with my g4. I spoke to ATI tech support and they told me that the speed is more or less even with 9800 card.

9600 card can be used with G5 and also supports Apple 30″ display. I had to get a card for my new 20″ Apple dislay and chose this option as my intention is also to get a G5 next year
