    Re. Color Grading

    Hi guys,

Silly question from a (relative) noob… but can anyone explain to me what is the difference between the above apps… or more precisely why I should be using Apple Color instead of say Color Finesse (which is integrated with AE).

I am lucky enough to have all 3 apps at my disposal, and something tells me I should be concentrating my energies on Apple Color, given its heritage..

    Thanks

    Elin.

Color Finesse is not realtime and it’s much more limited than Color, especially as Color has a Primary In, 8 Secondaries (16 if you could in the inside / outside of vignettes), the Color FX room and Primary Out giving you up to 19 individual layers of adjustments to each individual shot.

Looks is basically just a slap on filter. If you don’t want to think about what you’re doing and just want to apply a “look” to your project, this is a very simply plug-in.

Color is very in-depth and not for every user or every project. You simply cannot get the level of color grading adjustments in any other Mac based app than Color. You need to take the time to learn it much more than Finesse or Looks, that’s for sure, but once you get the hang of it, it’s quite simple.

You can get a lot more info on Color in the Color forum.

[Elin grome] “why I should be using Apple Color instead of say Color Finesse (which is integrated with AE)”
Because you can send your FC time line as it is to Color.
If you want to send it to AE, you need AutmatickDuck.
I agree with Walter, the options you get in Color you don’t get in the other applications.
    The secondary room is amazing.
Looks is great when you start to make your own looks, but is no really a CC application.
You need to make at least a primary CC with other filter before to apply it.
I think that a good ption could be ColorFiness in FC.
This would allow a very good CC without living FC and going RGB.
But probably if you start with Color you will stick with it.
    Cheers,
    Rafael

    “A few hours…”

For many, this is a career! I think you underestimate the steepness of the learning curve ahead of you.

[walter biscardi] “More like a few days.”

Unfortunately, the steepest part of the learning curve is not color correction itself, but rather learning to deal with the Color’s various idiosyncrasies.

Are there any good classes making the rounds to teach Color? Or, second-best: well-done tutorials?

My DVD is pretty much everything I learned in a $1,500 training session. Definitely gets you started in the app.

Get Walter’s DVD and watch it first. I was using Color sucessfully fifteen minutes afterward.

Later, when you want to get into the real nuances of Color, check out the Ripple Training DVD. It goes very deep into Color and deep into the colorization process.
