  • RE-ASK — KONA 2 WON’T LET MY G5 GO TO SLEEP!

Posted by Jim Blokland on July 7, 2005 at 2:56 am

    Hello:

I’ve just installed my Kona 2 card on my new Dual 2.7 G5. I’m currently running OS 10.4.1 and using FCP 5 with the 1.1.2 Kona drivers. The problem is that when I try to sleep the computer, the screens go black (and I believe the fan shuts off…) but the ‘sleeping breathing’ light on the CPU doesn’t come on. It stays solid…and the computer gets quite hot as the CPU is still engaged but the fans don’t seem to be. I began to experience this problem after installing the Kona 2.

If you have any recommendations on how I can get true ‘deep sleep’ mode, I’d appreciate it.

    Best, JIM.

    Hello AJA:

I already e-mailed this question to the support address a week ago and haven’t heard back yet. Just thought I’d post here for some ‘user’ advice/experience.

    Hope to solve this soon.

    Best, JIM.

What kind of drives do you have hooked up? What are your energy preferences set to? Any other PCI cards installed?

    Hi Jeremy:

I’ve just got two internal 250 GB SATAs for the time-being. I’ve also got the Radeon X800 XT video card. Other than that, no other PCI cards except for the Kona 2. As for Energy settings, I’ve got the ‘sleep drives whenever possible’ checked, and the Processor Performance set to ‘Highest’.

    Any insights welcome.

[Jim Blokland] “I’ve also got the Radeon X800 XT video card.”

Same thing here… soon as I installed the X800 XT, my Dual 2.5 wouldn’t go to sleep either. Updated with the latest ATI Drivers and the problem has disappeared.

    Hey Harley:

Thanks for the info. That is probably the culprit. Makes sense. I thought I did download the latest drivers and install them — do you by chance have a link for the drivers you’re using, or the version number?

Thanks again. It will be nice to get my 2.7 sleeping tight again!

    Damn…

Just updated the ROM firmware to 109, reinstalled the ATI 4.5.1 display driver and repaired permissions — still the same thing. The screens go black, but no ‘sleeping breathing’ and the sound of a fan going on the CPU (not sure which fan…could be the CPU or the X800…

It’s getting to the point where I forget exactly what is supposed to happen with true ‘deep sleep’. Maybe I need to get some…

Sorry for late response Jim, but my system never went back to the “breathing sleep” either. The “breathing sleep” sleep stopped as soon as I changed to the X800. For what it’s worth, my system does sleep and the fan you hear running is on the X800. This G5 runs 24/7 and it’s been behaving real well.
