  • RAW Image not big enough for movie poster?

Hello there. I recently shot some images on a Canon 5d Mark II using what I think was the largest RAW file size (the image is 24.5MB with dimensions of 3744 × 5616).

What I’m trying to do is make a full size movie poster (27″ x 40″ at 300dpi).

    So, here’s my process:

I open the image in Photo RAW and save it as a TIF with these settings:

THEN, I make a separate file in Photoshop with the settings for my poster: 27″ x 40″ at 300dpi.

Then I place my TIF into that document and it’s smaller than the canvas. When I blow it up and look at it at 100%, it has of course lost resolution and looks pixelated. What the hell happened here? Did I not shoot at the highest RAW settings or am I missing something?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Movie posters are designed to be viewed from a bit of a distance. Talk to your printer, but I’ve had printing specs that call anywhere from 72dpi to 150dpi for poster sized art.

    27X40 @ 150dpi = 4050×6000 which falls within a 25MP image.
