  • Range Tool – Can’t find Timelength of selection using Range Tool & Can’t ” Reveal in Event Browser ” for Multicam Clips

Hey all! Really hoping that someone knows FCPX enough to find a simple “feature” that I was hoping would jump out at me.

I used the range tool to select an area of a multicam clip so I could tell a client about a range of time in a performance where there was an issue with framing on a subject of their choice.

All i wanted to do is identify How long the section of the clip was Without cutting the section out and using the inspector to tell me how long it was. It doesn’t take that long to cut it and then undo the cut – (It’s taken longer to write this rant) but I was hoping for a simple solution while we all wait for In & Out points to be as useful as they once were.

Let alone the “Reveal in Event Browser” function doesn’t work on multicam clips when a Range is selected across the clip. If anything at all, the range function isn’t useful on the clip except to performa ripple delete as I can’t even apply a keyword to the range of the clip once it is in the timeline…. Why Apple? @_@ Why?

IT IS SOMETHING SO ELEGANTLY SIMPLE IN FCP 7 and I am dissappointed that there isn’t a so called revolutionary intuitive way to get more precise information – even if the “feature” of setting In & Out points across the timeline in its whole isn’t present….

Pardon the ranting – but this great new paradigm is really showing its cost when trying to accurately place in and out points, markers, and perform edits on the frame of my choice before putting a clip in the timeline @_@ Almost ready to finally ready to commit to Avid or Premiere … can anyone save me and my workflow?

Wait figured it out @_@ More ranting to be had of course but I was surprised to find the simple way after all

Ctrl-D – engages the Change duration feature in the time indicator – and as such it tells you how long a range is after you have selected in and out points

I Really REALLY wish the context menu would show up over range selections so that I could have seen this in the program, thus making it more intuitive 😛 Maybe there is something wrong with my multicam clips but the range tool almost disables every option to affect the range selected, and the context menu won’t appear with a right or ctrl-click @_@

Surprised Ctrl-D worked but I guess there are features that holding up 🙂

Selected duration and overall duration show up in the frame just below the timeline. If nothing is slected the overall duration and format are there. Bottom center of the screen.
