  Randomize fade-up and Fade down of individual shapes

  Have a tight deadline and wondering if any good soul can point me in the right direction.

  I have background that with a pattern of shapes as seen here:

  

  Client wants to have each individual box (square or rectangle whatever you want to call it) RANDOMLY fade up to become brighter and then fade down to become darker.

  Hopefully there is also a way to control the fade up/fade down time as well as the frequency.

  I’m assuming we can do this with expressions?
  Would I need to have each box on it’s own layer?

  Looking forward to any help.
