    Hi all,
i’m pretty new to AE (just using it for some personal animation and curiosity).

I’m looking for a way to recreate a common effect, mostly used in horror and thriller movie trailer:
i’d like to place a text in random positions and blur it due to its movement and ONLY when it moves.

I tried the wiggle expression but it partially does my needs:
it reproduce continous movement, same thing with the position transformation.

What i want instead, is a text layer which can give the impression to be disturbed (blurred) when it jumps from a position to another, like wiggle do.

    I hope it’s clear enough.

    Thank you in advance.

    Hi Francesco,
what you want to do can be achieved in several ways.
The fastest and easiest is to turn on the motion blur, both for the text layer and in the composition options, that will blur the text, in consistence with the speed and direction of the momvements given by the wiggle.
If you want to achieve specific results, instead, you could use expressions; for instance you can apply a blur effect to the text and link the blur amount, with an expression, to the position’s speed or velocity of the same level. This lets you control much more easily the type and amount of blur you want to achieve.
    Hope this answered your question.

    Best,
    Stefano

I got it… first way you suggested seems to work good for my purpose.

    Thank you very much !!!!!!

If you’re feeling adventurous you can look into text animators as well. They’re very robust and can be hard to understand, but they work pretty easily for simple animations. Essentially they alter some value of the text (position, opacity, blur, rotation, color, etc.) from the source value based on a ‘selector.’

So as a simple example if you apply a text animator with a Wiggly selector and a Position property and enter [200, 100] for the [x, y] values your text could potentially be offset anywhere from -200 to 200 pixels in the x dimension and -100 to 100 pixels in the y dimension (by default the wiggly selector will vary between 100% selected and -100% selected).

I believe there may already be a text animator preset that does something similar to what you’re trying to achieve.

Sounds a bit harder but worth try it.
    Thanks for the advice Darby.
