I cannot for the life of me get a RAM preview of my whole animation. I am using AE 7, the clip is 2 minutes long. It seems to always only do a chunk of the animation. Checked the help files and found nothing on how to preview the entire animation.

    Any help?

If it is necessary laptop specs are. Dell Inspiron, 2.3 ghz, 1gb RAM, 60gb HDD, NVIDIA Go7800 vid card.

AE is not like Premiere or Final Cut where you can just preview your whole timeline. To get a whole 7 min comp to RAM Preview your gonna need a LOT more RAM. Try opening up your comp settings and lowering the resolution to preview a longer duration.

Don’t forget edit>purge image caches every now and then.

Umm, guess why it’s called RAM preview? 1 Gig levels out to about 45 secs of preview time at full resolution at best. Lower your comp resolution to half or quarter and try it again. Since AE will calculate less pixels per frame, many more frames fit into your RAM and thus you may be able to preview much larger chunks (not necessarily your entire timeline).

Thanks guys. I actually thought of that too. About the limit being my RAM, but I was like, “nah it shold only make it run slower…”…I guess I was wrong. Wonder why it doesnt explain this in the help files.

    Again thanks.

you can also try ‘skip frames’ in the RAM preview box, this will give you more run for your money… though obviously you’re not getting the whole deal
