    Hello,
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I have been trying to figure out a solution without success. I am new to AE but fairly proficient with Motion. I am used to setting a RAM preview and then being able to go do other things, (ie. work with other applications) while it’s creating the preview. However the only way for AE to create the preview seems to be for me to sit here and watch its progress frame by frame. Is there some setting I can change? Thanks for your help.

    Hi Gabrielle,

You should be able to work on other programmes when AE is rendering the preview (though your machine will inevitably become a bit sluggish). You can also set your ram preview options to render at a lesser frame rate or resolution to speed things up a bit.

you can also download a script from aescripts.com/ called throttle that will allow you to set idle rendering (among other things).

once downloaded, place it in applications/after effects/scripts/ScriptUI panels (if needed create a folder called ‘ScriptUI Panels’), then it can be accessed the next time you open ae from the window menu (at the bottom of the list).

there is also a cool script there for background rendering called bg renderer cs3…
