Raid 0 and 5 advice + Snow Leopard and FCP 7
I just decided to finally install Snow Leopard, so I thought I’d try to install it on an internal RAID 0. Boot up seems a bit snappier and the desktop seems to come up quicker. I had hoped with a 2 drive RAID 0 that the increase in throughput would lead to a faster load time for applications but it did not.
To back up my RAID 0, I purchased an OWC 8 TB RAID 5, I spent roughly $1500.00. This has to be one of the most affordable RAID 5 options I’ve found. It comes preconfigured as a RAID 5, the effective space is about 5.7 GB after redundancy. I’ve been using time machine for backups, and I’m very happy with this solution so far. Its been rock solid. I did have to purchase the Sonnet eSata card, you can purchase the E2P or in my case the E4P.
I also took the time to install my FCP7 at the same time. This was one of the easiest updates to install but it does take several hours for the full install. I finally have clients asking for Blue Ray, so this led to my decision to update. All in all the process was pain free.
I had 2 or 3 days off from work so I decided to take a chance and upgrade and I have to tell you, I’ve been angry many times and said I’d never do it again, but with all of these major updates I have had 0 issues. You have to hand it to Apple, they are doing an amazing job.
When I get some free time I’ll have to try switching over to a 64 bit kernel.
