.R3D files in Sony Vegas 9
Hey guys, so I’m cutting a student film shot on the RED ONE in Sony Vegas 9.0 and I have some file type questions. I want to edit the .R3Ds natively because they play pretty smoothly on my PC. I’ll be projecting the film in the campus cinema via a 2K projector (I think) and plan to render down to a resolution of 1920×1080. What would the best codec be to use to render the final product? I’ll have a lot of color correction plug-ins on the files and I want to get the best quality render. I’m used to rendering to .AVI with an XVID codec, but I’ve heard that XVID isn’t the best. So what’s best quality that will play smoothly on the average computer? Lemme know!

I get good results rendering to 1920 x 1080 30P 32 bit floating, Progressive Program stream mpeg 2 format.

Thanks for responding, that’s interesting. You prefer MPEG2 over AVI for this type of process? What are it’s advantages? Thanks!

I put alot of videos on various video servers and most use mpeg’s. I also use the extra vga output of laptops and put that on projectors. If your using a computer as your source, also try .wmv with the highest quality settings. They look good and can also be played back on a fairly fast computer as a source. If your going to use the rendered footage again, then uncompressed or an intermediate format,
(Like Cineform) can save you hard drive space. Hope this helps,Danny Hays
