QuickTips: Adjusting audio filters visually in FCP X
FCP X has a pretty fantastic feature of showing waveforms adjustments on the fly, which can easily be seen by making volume adjustments to a clip. However, it doesn’t just work for volume adjustments but for filters as well, letting you make precise adjustments before you even listen to the clip.
The brilliance of this staggering. I’m not aware of any DAW that enables you to SEE the results of audio adjustments in real time (correct me if I am wrong). The feature lets you make adjustments in dynamics visually, as you perform them. Brilliant!
For example, here is a voice over with obvious background noise and a noise gate applied:
It can be clearly seen by examining the waveform that the noise is not being eliminated by the gate. So I’ll lower the threshold until and I can actually SEE the noise being eliminated:
Here is another example of a clip with a compressor applied but with a bit to much gain which introduces peaking:
So I enable the brick wall limiter, and adjust the threshold until the peaks are gone.
Wow!
