[Steve Rhoden] “Convert the WMV files also if you can.”

Yea, get rid of the WMV files. Those are not to be edited. WMV is OK as a delivery format but is horrible as an editing format.

[Philip Lyons] “Vegas is now crashing A LOT!! And won’t accept my .avi files.”

    What codec did you use?

H.264 I’ve seen a lot of people online saying Vegas won’t play .avi unless you download codec’s. I’ve downloaded the divx codec which was suggested and Klite codec, and none seem to have made any difference.

Don’t believe everything you read on the Internet because you have just caused the problem yourself.

First, H.264 should NEVER be placed in an AVI file. Don’t do this! DivX is a hack. Vegas Pro will not edit DivX, or Xvid, or any x.264 files in an AVI container. As I said, just don’t do this.

Second, Uninstall the K-Lite codec-pak, Uninstall Vegas Pro. Reboot your PC, re-install Vegas Pro, and pray that things start working again.

Third, Never, ever, NEVER install ANY codec-pak on a PC that you use for video editing. It takes the high quality codecs that you paid Sony for an replaces them with questionable quality free codecs. Codec-paks will cause all sorts of problems with Vegas Pro and they don’t always uninstall cleanly. If you have backup or restore point from before you install K-Lite you might want to restore to this point instead of uninstalling because it may remove the damage more cleanly.

It’s unfortunate that you got into this mess. I would render the files to Sony MXF. This will edit easily in Vegas Pro.

Well I un installed Vegas, cleaned up the computer, re installed and still have the same problem. I was thinking I could just convert all the video’s into something else and start again. At least then its a way forward to carry on with the project. Even if it does take time.

I did try to render one of the clips as an MXF but Vegas wouldn’t accept it back in to edit. Don’t know if i used the correct MXF template or settings though. So if I can’t use .mov and .wmv is no good, what format should I convert to?

Thanks again for all your help, can’t believe this has gone on so long!!

    Stay away from Codec Packs!
Im now at a loss as to what else would be causing Vegas to be behaving
    so awful on your system.

Haha!! Yes I’ve learn’t my lesson! No codec packs! I have found that if I paste a quicktime vid that isn’t working in my project, into a new project on its own, it plays perfectly fine. So I think this idea windows being limited to using so many quicktime vids could be true. So im going to slowly render all the quicktime and wmv clips into mxf files (which I think i’ve figured out now) and piece the project back together again.

At least now I have something, and I can continue on the project whereas before I had nothing to go on.

Thank you John and Steve for all your help and advice, You have really been a great help! Don’t know where I would have been if it wasn’t for your knowledge!

Really appreciate it, and I’m very thankful there is people like you out there, willing to lend a hand to people in difficulty!

    Thank you so much 🙂

OK, I was going to ask you what MXF template you used because I’ve never hear of Vegas not being able to edit it’s own MXF files. I’m glad you figured it out.

Yes I think I used the wrong settings, and then realised I needed 60i to match my project settings and it worked perfect that time! So the project is back on and moving forward! woohoo!! Might be a bit late, but better late than never!
