  • Quicktime files not importing correctly

Posted by James Strecker on February 3, 2014 at 3:22 am

Hi, everyone. I apologize if this is a repost of a problem that has already been dealt with in the past, but I cannot seem to find a solution online anywhere.

The problem I am having is that any time I try to bring in any type of Quicktime file into my timeline, it imports the audio but the video is just blackness. There is a video aspect that appears on the timeline, so it’s not like it’s only importing audio…in a way. There is video along with it, it is just nothing but black. This goes for .mov, .mp4, and any other Quicktime file type.

The strangest part is that I can usually link this to a Quicktime update but there has not been one that coincides with this issue beginning. I have video from my iPhone that I need to work with, as well as various effects shots that I rendered as Avid DNxHD codec .mov files.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and I can supply more information if needed.

    Thank you!

P.S. This only started happening within the last few days. I have always been able to import and work with these file types in the past. I don’t know what changed or how to fix it.

Have their been any Windows updates? You never know what Microsoft is changing that breaks other programs. I turned Windows updates off and I apply them all once a month after my full monthly backup. Open the files in the QuickTime player and press Ctrl+I to bring up the Inspector and see what codec they use and be sure it is a codec you have installed although if they come from your iPhone they should be AVC/H.264.

You didn’t mention what version of Vegas Pro you have but older versions need an older version of QuickTime.

I updated Itunes (Win64) a few days ago and it broke Quicktime and DNxHD entirely.

Had to uninstall all the Apple software, iTunes, Quicktime, and reinstall everything including a repair install of DNxHD.

I thought it was just me, but apparently the latest iTunes win64 update is messing up a lot of people.

When you have an editing system, its a bad idea to do automatic updates.

Ditto what they said – do windows updates manually and with caution.

See if you have a system restore point to which you can roll back.

If you don’t have a restore point available, then review the System Restore settings, make sure it is on and set to backup files as well as config.

I’m using the latest QuickTime 7.7.4 with the latest iTunes 11.1.4 with the latest Vegas Pro 12.0 Build 770 and I’m not having any problems. I can read and render to Avid DNxHD just fine.

Hi Gabriel, Open the MOV file in the QuickTime Player and press Ctrl+I to bring up the Inspector window. What does it say under Video Format? This will tell you what video codec you need to display the file correctly.
