  • Quick Question about hd video cameras and sony vegas

Just wondering If I bought an hd video camera would I get better quality using sony vegas with my final dvd project. I have a regular dv camera that records to memory stick and I know when you compress to mpeg 2 you lose quality. Would I be wasting my time buying a better camera or would the quality of the video be worth it in the end. I do my editing mainly with motorcross footage and it is just for personnel enjoyment.

First of all, your camcorder (Sony DCRDVD610) is a miniDVD camcorder and already records to MPEG-2 format.
Any editing and subsequent burning to DVD is only going to further compress the original footage.
Recording to your memory stick isn’t going to change the footage from it’s MPEG-2 format.
The biggest drawback is that, at the consumer level, MPEG-2 was never designed to be a source format, only a delivery format.
If you’re even somewhat serious about getting good source material to edit with, invest in a tape-based camcorder.
With the falling prices, it doesn’t make any sense to go with an SD (standard def) camcorder these days.
There’s a wide range of HD camcorders these days so my suggestion would be to check out various makes/models to see what you like and then search the various Vegas forums to see if there have been any incompatibility problems with your choices.
