  • Quick Keying Question….

Posted by Mike Wavrecan on November 10, 2005 at 7:59 pm

Working on a project that has a few hard problems to overcome. We have a person in a complete bluesuit playing a guitar. We want to key him out yet still seeing the strings being played. Any ideas of how to do this. On a wide shot I can go frame by frame and probably cover up where the blue was but on a close up I will have problems…

    any ideas?

    thanks.

As you have discovered, chroma-key is not the proper way to create this kind of effect.
(Just because you can “key-out” the BLUE, that does not allow the “blue-person” to become INVISIBLE… it just means you can REPLACE the blue area with some other video… which you don’t HAVE.)

This would be better handled by just shooting the guitar strings area in CU and using
a high-pressure AIR NOZZLE blowing the strings.

With careful timing and “finesse”, the strings can be made to vibrate in sync with the audio track.

There are many other ways (like framing so a person strums the upper strings from just off-camera) or… use your own imagination.
