  • Questions: Blurry Video; 24P Sky is wavy?; Setting to use in Vegas for Sqeeze Mode

    Gurus –

I have been attempting to figure out why the video from my DVX100A at times looks so blurry when I am shooting my gardens. I did find it seems to be an issue with the auto focus since I can go to manual focus and bring in details. However, at times, the details are almost too harsh looking more like something I would get from a $150 camcorder. I am shooting 60i using the F1 stop with the default setting. I reviewed the DVD that came with Barry Green’s book and have been trying to tweak some setting to smooth things out. If any of you have a suggestion of what I might tweak to get a smoother look but still retain detail using auto focus, let me know! In the meantime, I will keep exploring. The camera has so many options – I’m loving the challenge by the way!

When I go to 24P, the manual focus images are much better but I noticed when I pointed to a flower with the sky as a backdrop, that I have noticeable waves appearing in the sky. My setting for this was the recommended Z99, F2.8. Is this a common occurence when shooting 24P against a sky backdrop?

I have looked through the manual and understand that the camera is native 4:3 but I can apply the sqeeze mode and it actually changes how the pixels are arranged. Does that mean if I am editing in Vegas I need to change the capture or property pararmeters to best utilize this mode? If so, to what?

I apologize for such a long post but sincerely appreciate you taking the time to read this and respond.

I have never tried to post a still. I made some jpg screenshots but how do I post them?

First you need to get it online and then post a link. There’s dozens of free image hosting services like:

Per Noah’s suggestion I have added screenshots of the video I shot. Hopefully, they will be clear enough to be helpful to you in helping me out. So you do not have to reread my first post:

Pictures 1, 2, and 3 are out of focus from my viewpoint and reflect the way most of the video looked. They were shot at the default F1 setting on the DVX100A using autofocus. Are there problems with auto focus for this type of picture? Picture 4 shot at 24P. Note the wavy pattern in the white sky. Is this normal? This was shot manual focus, F1 default setting, Z99, F2.8.

Again, thank you for taking the time to look at my problem.

In general I recommend never using autofocus because it’s much less accurate than the human eye. Use the viewfinder to set focus manually. As for the 4th shot it’s hard to tell what’s up as the resolution is small. Post a bigger picture if possible.

I agree with you. Once I went to manual focus, my blurry problems went away. This may be a stupid question, but how do you do a manual focus if you are zooming either in or out? I did do a manual focus on an object I wanted to zoom in on. I measured off the distance and used a focus chart to set the correct manual focus setting. Sure enough, once zoomed to the object, the focus was sharp but during the zoom, everything looked soft. Should I have been trying to adjust the manual focus while I was zooming as well?

Again, I appreciate your help. I will try to post a larger picture.

Hmm- doesn’t look like anything is in focus in that flower shot. Either an operating error or I suppose could be a bad camera if that’s the best you can get out of it.

    Noah –

The picture may look blurry because I blew it up quite a bit to display the wave form in the sky. The wave look is actually in my video as well but the flowers do look sharper than they appear in this shot. I think I will reshoot and re-evaluate the results taking in consideration either me or my camera is in need of attention :-).

    Thank you for responding.
