  • Question regarding render speed with GI + Ambient Occlusion + Caustics

Hi there, im working on an animation that involves a camera moving inside a video wall (kinda) thing.

The light in the scene is generated by the LCD screens themselves by using GI, but, this happens to take like 16 hours to render 500 frames at PAL SD resolution…

Im on a quad xeon Mac Pro, is this normal or am i doing something wrong ?

After almost 9 hours of rendering, it is STILL doing the GI pass… is this normal or am i doing something REALLY wrong ?

    EDIT:

Not to mention that im NOT using scene motion blur… i can not imagine how much time it could take to render these 500 frames if i turn on 16x motion blur…. god

    Thanks in advance, Diego.

    Cheers.
    Diego Massanti.

Read all of Help/Advanced Render/Global Illumination, the Speeding up GI section in has good info and there are more hints on speed up in the Parameters section as well. Other than that yes, GI is a lot slower but there is a lot you can do but it depends a lot on the scene as well and you have to spend time finding settings that are as fast as possible with the look you need before you commit to a full ‘all frames’ render.
