  • question regarding adding 3d effects in AE

Posted by Sebastian Plamadeala on July 23, 2005 at 10:09 pm

hello. i am relatively new to video-editing, but i am familiar with 3d modeling.

some time ago, i have seen a movie clip with a young boy demonstrating his skills with a lightsaber (star wars).

i saw 2 verisons, later a third, but with a very insignificant change:

    1: the boy was fighting with a broomstick instead of a lightsaber (naturaly);

2: the boy was now holding a doble-bladed (or staff) lightsaber.

3:the boy was holding a normal lightsaber.

My question: is it possible to create such 3d glowing effects and overlap them, sincronizeing them to one’s motion? i mean, if i film myself holding a stick, and moving it about, i can later change it to a snake and sync it to my exact motion, without the original stick be seen in the rendered movie? if so, how? (if i am using the wrong software (AE), please, redirect me to the one suitable.)

I have been searching answers for this question for a long time now, but with now real succes.

    Thank you in advance, Sebastian

do a search for “lightsaber” for all active posts,

there’s a great thread with links for tutorials etc.

Yeah, there are a million lightsaber posts out there. Polls show that 1 in every 4 Americans have now made light sabers over home movies 🙂 Just kidding although it seems like it. I remember a dad wanting to find out so his kids could do their own lightsaber battle.

On a technical note: Doing a lightsaber and a snake would be two different approaches though. A lightsaber, you are rotoing an actual mask over the broomstick (including the motion blur from said stick) and using blurring and glow on the actual mask. This is basically how they did the real lightsabers in the original Star Wars films (although they did it optically instead of digitally).

A snake, however, would be a matchmove but would be a bear to get the motion blur just right to cover up the motion blur from the broomstick on film/tape.

Here is a tutorial. It uses Commotion for it’s roto since it’s a way better program for roto, but AE’s roto will do just fine for this:

CInema 4D will import Quicktime movies for use as a texture on an object or as a background layer fro compositing.
There is no chroma-keying in C4D (for removing the green)

So maybe import video in C4D for reference on where to position your 3D elements, and for adjusting your virtual camera & perspective, but render without the video and with alpha.
Then bring the rendered files into After Effects for compositing and greenscreen.

I remember there’s also a videotutorial disk for sale at DV-garage that not only explains the Lightsabers but also how to use greenscreen and a virtual set created in a 3D program.

Sounds like what you’re going for, no?

Here are some examples tutorial movies from that CD:
