Question about stacking an effect on a specific layer
Hi guys. I thought I’d be able to do this easily, but I can’t get it to work.
I’m using Trapcode’s Form effect, and what I want to do with it is only apply it on top of a text layer. I envisioned to do this by making a black background, making the effect white and selecting the Overlay blending mode. The text would of course be non-black and would therefore isolate the Form effect on it.. in theory.
Well this didn’t work for me, and when I pre-composed and then made the layer Overlay it didn’t work either. Perhaps I need to try something other than blending modes, so I’m open to suggestions. Thanks.

Do you mean you want the effect to be visible only inside the shape of the text? If so put your effect on its own layer and use your text layer as a track matte.
The AE manual is a great thing to read through. You will not only learn all the basics, such as how to use track mattes, but it will also give you tons more ideas on cool things to do.

You could also use a layer map within form.

Track matte worked, I can’t believe I haven’t thought of the obvious.
