  • Question about MainConcept AVC/AAC

Posted by Grzegorz Kwiatkowski on September 11, 2012 at 8:34 am

I have to upload a pilot of a program I’ve produced for a TV station. They want a specific format. I have problem with two things. In MainConcept AVC/AAC render menu I can’t choose constant bitrates different than these from the popup menu (768kbps/2000kbps/4000kbps/10000kbps) and they want 1100kbps. Second thing they want is embedded timecode in mov track. How to do it? Big thanks for help.

    Below are their requirements:

    MOV or MP4

    Video Codec
    H.264 Main Profile 3.1
    Also known as “MPEG-4 AVC”

    Audio Codec
    AAC-LC
Up to 160kbps 48kHz. Stereo recommended.
5.1 surround sound is not supported.

    Streaming Rate
    1,100 kilobits per second (kbps)
Rates between 500 and 1500 kbps are acceptable. Smaller rates are recommended for smaller frame sizes (e.g. 700kbps for 480×270).
All video should be encoded with a constant bitrate for “streaming”.
Rates higher than 5000kbps will not play within DMC and are not accepted without prior agreement.

    Frame Rate
25, 29.97, or 30 frames per second (fps), progressive scan

    Frame Size
    640 x 360 recommended
Other frame sizes or aspect ratios are acceptable as appropriate for content.
It is not necessary to “burn-in” black bars to fit a particular aspect ratio unless
the final program is expected to have bars.

    Timecode
An embedded timecode track in MOV format is recommended
DMC will display timecode from an embedded timecode track if it is supplied.
Burned-in timecode may be added if desired (this can be useful for playback outside of DMC).

[Grzegorz Kwiatkowski] “In MainConcept AVC/AAC render menu I can’t choose constant bitrates different than these from the popup menu (768kbps/2000kbps/4000kbps/10000kbps) and they want 1100kbps.”

Actually they said that “Rates between 500 and 1500 kbps are acceptable” so you could use 768kbps but I can understand you wanting to give more quality.

I would start with the Internet 360p widescreen template and use VBR but set the Max and Average both to 1,100,000 and see if they accept it. if not you can use CBR with 768,000.

[Grzegorz Kwiatkowski] “Second thing they want is embedded timecode in mov track.”

Well… that was just a recommendation. Since you can’t render QuickTime AVC/H.264 from Vegas you’re not going to get a mov file and therefore not going to have embedded timecode. You can always burn-in timecode by adding the Sony Timecode FX to the Master Video Bus.

John, so embedding the timecode is only possible using mov container? In mp4 I should burn in the timecode to satisfy them?

[Grzegorz Kwiatkowski] “so embedding the timecode is only possible using mov container?”

Well… other containers besides MOV support timecode but MP4 doesn’t support timecode so give the two choices, MOV does and MP4 doesn’t.

[Grzegorz Kwiatkowski] “In mp4 I should burn in the timecode to satisfy them?”

I would. That’s what they requested.
