  • Question about Dropping Frames During Capture

Posted by Q_yes Just the letter on December 16, 2005 at 9:23 pm

A friend of mine is capturing footage shot on Sony HDV cameras in FCP5. He has deselcted the “abort capture when dropped frames occur” in user preferences, yet he is still unable to capture. It just says “dropepd frames” when it aborts the capture. Any light that can be shed on this issue would be greatly appreciated. Oh he is capturing on a Sony HDV deck through firewire on Pwer Mac G5. Thanks again.

Tell us more about his hard drive configuration. Is he trying to capture to a Firewire drive also hooked up directly to his G5?

Well, I think you’ve just identified the problem…

Yeah!! Someone has the same ideas like me!

I can tell you, it works. My setup is a somewhat horrible you might say, but see:
I’ve captured DV on a Dual 1 GHz G4 (Panther) with Final Cut Pro 5 through a samba-network (1 GBit) on a huge 4 drive raid-0 arry thats inside of a windows pc running XP. Strange isn’t it?

Like you, someone is working on the Windows PC during capture. It is no problem, only a few dropped frames. (Of course after changing Windows default-behavior…) The same error occured on the G4. A single frame dropped and it aborted!
There are two points snside the “usersettings” of FCP5. You must choose them as following:
    1) abort capture on dropped frames – deslect
    2) on timecode-break: [create a new clip] or [notice after capture]
(don’t mind differences, i’m german and freely translated it).

That worked for me and I hope as well for your project.

    Good luck,
    greetings
