  • quality difference between Dv and 8-bit?

Posted by Paul Escamilla on September 27, 2005 at 5:44 pm

I captured the same piece of video off a DVD twice. The first time I used the DV codec, the second time I used 8-bit uncompressed.

When I watched the video back on my Sony monitor, I was surprised that I could not see any real difference betweent the two. This was true whether the video was playing, or freeze-framed.

Is this becasue the source was a dvd, which is already compressed video?

    Yes.
And because just looking at a “regular” video image, its hard to find fault with DV.
When you start adding small graphics and looking at tiny image details, the DV starts losing points to 8 bit..

Capturing 8-bit does not improve on the quality of the DV image It is compressed 5:1 from the start.

What you gain, as was said, is in the text and graphics.

I like to use 8bit RGB (maybe a 75% compressed JPEG timeline) when I incorporate RGB color graphics. I find that trying to put any art or text over DV tends to suffer. Exceptions are some plugins that pre-compose the graphics… meaning, something like Boris will lay the CG over the video in a 24bit RGB color space, then flatten it back to DV. Often I’m outputting to DVD, so the DV color space of 4.2.0 (depending on camera) is not as good. I add in a lot of graphics and Powerpoint (not doing features but business video).

    My two pennies.

I thank all of you for the input and advice. And, of course, a huge thanks to Creative Cow for this awesome resource they provide! I am always amazed at how much I learn here, and how quickly the experts respond.

Here’s a site which has tons of info on the various codecs:
    https://codecs.onerivermedia.com/

I’m going to do some experimenting with keying graphics over the dv and 8-bit video clips to compare.

    Cheers!
