QT vs AVi
Hi – I’m hoping someone here can shed some light on this for me. I’m coming to the end of a short film production. It’s animated and rendered at 1280 by 720 ( to go out to a film print down the track). I’m bringing the files in to Premiere Pro as quicktimes ( the final footage is with the Animation compressor) – and planning on editing with footage compressed with photo jpeg to keep the data rates low. The system I’m using has no problem with the data rates of the Animation compressed clips (which are get up to 60 MB /sec) – it plays them in the Qt player no problem. Within Premiere how ever these clips (and the photo jpeg ones sometimes- dependant on the settings) are not playing anywhere close to normally. Can anyone suggest the project settings I should be using to get reasonably feedback from this resolution and format ? Is Premiere Pro happier dealing with AVI’s – and if converting everything to avi is the way to go which is the best codec for lossless compression? Greatly appreciate any advice or pointers here – I’m not an experienced Premiere Pro user. Thanks in advance.

My experience of film out put was done by editing in PremPro (PAL dvAVI lossless) and I then took the export into an After Efects Comp at the Film Out put Resolution for 1:1.185. ( cant remember the px but something ike 1780 x X )
From AE I exported sequential tiffs and these were output to film in an Arri Scanner. The results were excellent.
What are you intending to do with what ever you produce in PremPro ? Is this for your final out put ?
Anyway I believe you will be better editing in avi within PremPro.

The final output at this stage will be digi beta – so post-edit everything will need an anamorphic squeeze down to SD. But I’ll output an image sequence at 720 x 1280 for going out to film at a later date. I’m thinking I could output the initial footage from AFX(as it is all composited material)as SD at this stage with duplicate clips at 720p. Cut with the SD for the digi beta master and then replace the SD clips with the 720p clips when I need to go out to film. Works in theory… any previous experience here greatly appreciated.
So if it is so that Premiere will be happier and run more smoothly with AVIs the codec I want is dvAVI ? Excuse my ignorance here – I dont have extensive experience with AVI, I use .mov almost exclusively. Happy to make the change for the right reasons and with the right advice.

My understanding is QT and avi are basically the same with some different info in the headers (whatever they are ?) The presets in PremPro are set up for avi so that is a compelling reason to use avi. Easy to convert mov to avi. I use QT Pro. (Others may step in here and tell you that movs will edit fine in PremPro). For me I try and keep everything the same as the project settings.
Tip for PRemPro exports ( Do Not Recompress)
You may want to check out any issues of NTSC ( assuming here) with what you intend to do. I am a PAL-Lander so can not offer much advice on that.
BTW – AFX does a great job of up rezzing and out putting seq. image files.
