QT Reference Files From FCP for PC playback?
Is there a way to provide a QT Reference (Not a Self-Contained Movie) that can be played on a PC that has QT Pro. My Final Cut and PC are sharing a SAN. The SAN is seen as a local drive by both the Mac and the PC. The SAN is a Third Party not XSAN. I have tried various methods. No matter what codec or method I try, the PC will see the QT but only present the Audio and not the Video.

No, the PC will not be able to properly reference the material. In fact, I don’t believe it’s possible to make a Reference file that will work on anything but the computer that creates it.

The QT reference I created on 1 Mac with FCP will play on a totally different Mac, without FCP installed, as long as it also sees the SAN as a local drive. Also this process in reverse, create QT reference on PC with AVID and it will playback on a Mac as long as both machines see the SAN as a local drive. All the machines in this test are loaded with the last release of QT PRO. Any Ideas?

Which codec are you using? If it’s DVCPro HD there is a possibility that PC users can see it if certain software is installed.

I have selected various codecs for my “Reference” QT including DVCPRO-HD. I just double checked the path again using the DVCPRO-HD codec with the same results. QT Pro will play the audio from the reference file on the PC but will not play the video. What software might you be thinking of?

Raylight for the PC will let you read FCP DVCProHD files on a PC. You can download the demo here:

These guys make it possible to view DVCPro HD on any computer. The only other way is to install FC Studio on every computer and that isn’t even possible with PCs.
They also have cool software to edit the native MXF files.
