  • QT and codecs problem.

    hi there,
i wanted to downgrade from QT 7.5 to 7.3
    i did throw away QT 7.5.5 app and prefs, any QT files. like in the old days, confident that i was preventing any potential conflicts before installing 7.3; well, i get a message telling me 7.3 can’t be installed ’cause there’s a newer version already installed on my HD although it’s nowhere to be seen. i had to download QT 7.5 again from the apple site, as a result of my throwing away QT files (probably codecs) i can’t play certain QT footages (codecs?) and when i open a seq (old or new or in other projects) in FCP a window pops up and tells me:i ” codec can’t be found”;
when i go to fcp prefs/lecture seq settings and try to change compression
another window tells me that codec (and others) can’t be found.
    what heve i done?
    thanks

You need the throw away the QuickTime receipt in Library/Receipts. Did you do that?

Why are you going back to 7.3? Is it because of the version of FCP you’re using? I don’t think 7.3 is early enough; you might have to go back to 7.2. Problem though is that the last version of Tiger 10.4.11 doesn’t support the earlier versions of QuickTime. You might need to the backslush the OS as well.

    All the best,

    thx for the reply,
i tried to downgrade QT version because of my MC soft that supports only 7.3. just got FCP 6 that came with QT 7.5.5.
in the process i trashed many files resulting in ongoing problem.
now i can’t even open a seq in FCP. the project opens fine but with no timeline and only the viewer window.
when i click on a seq i get this message. “can’t find the codec. “you may use a compression mode without the good card” (i’m translating from french).
    any idea?
that’ll teach me to go back and forth bet avid and fcp.
    thx again

Best thing to do IMHO is setup a startup disk for FCP, and another for your version of MC… or upgrade your version of MC which will work OK along side FCP. I’ve 22 systems in the classroom I teach in part time with the latest of each app installed running on Leopard and QT 7.5.5. No conflicts I can see.

That is exactly what I do…partition my drive into two, one for FCP and one for AVID, because they both have different requirements for OS and QT versions.

As for trashing QT and installing again…that is dangerous and rarely successful. QT is a core OS component. Best practice is to reformat the drive and install the OS and QT versions from scratch. Something you’ll have to do if you partition anyway.

    yeah,
i think i’ll have to do that.
dumb question: can i reinstall the os only without having to reformat the disk? i’ll put the mc in an other sytem alltogether.
can i download FCP 6 qt codecs somewhere?
    thx

[dominique muller] “can i reinstall the os only without having to reformat the disk?”

Yeah, you can do an ARCHIVE AND INSTALL…it is an option. The best bet is to reformat though…back up your data first.

[dominique muller] “can i download FCP 6 qt codecs somewhere?”

YOu can only get those by installing FCP.
