We are an European based company and I’ve requested information at several companies for our IT situation:
– 2 Mac Pro’s, one (mainly) for animations (AE); one for FCP editing
– 1 iMac for editing FCP
– 2 windows computers for project administration
– 1 macbook pro for FCP editing when the pressure is high
– Codec: Apple Pro Res 422
– almost never work simultaneously on one FCP project
– currently have DAS (10 drives x 2 TB)
– will need shared storage 10-16TB; getting tired of copy and searching for projects all the time
Response from one company: use Terrablock 8XS 16 TB (18000 euro, 23500 dollar for full installation (including FC, shared filesystem license, switch, etc)
Other company: use GBlabs 16 TB (19000 euro’s, full installation)
The usual suspects…. But another company advised me, to go for the new QNAP 1079 pro or QNAP 1279. it’s an NAS and not a SAN, but specs are looking OK and price is significant lower (16 TB, 9000 euros full installation)
Is this a no go area for editing? Why? And what are the main disadvantages?

nothing wrong with QNAP or any NAS, but not for playback of multiple video systems. The problem with any NAS that has a single ethernet connection to the NAS box is that you simply don’t have the bandwidth to play back video from all of these systems from the NAS. There are lots of NAS (as you see here on this forum) that DO have the bandwidth – because they use ethernet link aggregation, Fibre, 10Gig ethernet, or
Infiniband. But a single point ethernet connection for the central storage device (like QNAP or Drobo) is just not fast enough to accomplish what you want.
The price you got for Facilis seems very low – if that is a real price, I would grab it.

This NAS has a 4 x 1 GbE LAN Ports and can be extended with a 2×10 GbE card (for the two MacPro’s), you lose 2x1GbE but I still have 2x1GbE left. I found a review on the net where someone managed to have 250-300 MB/s transfer rate for the 10GbE and 100 MB/ for the 1GbE. What do you think? Still not an option?

Sorry to cut in on Bob here but I think we would agree that you’ll not get a video-centric SAN for the price of a Qnap. You can certainly find solutions that fit your facility in a wide range of costs, even up to 6-figures, but in the sub $25K range you will indeed get what you pay for.
The 8XS is our low-end model, thus we offer only the 4Gbit aggregate throughput, good for about 300MB/sec. This is published in our video stream counts rather conservatively at 10 for Pro Res 4:2:2. However, we also carry fibre on board, in the form of dual-port 4Gbit. These pipes can be used to access the same data as your 1Gbit lines, but at substantial increase in throughput. All it takes is a cable and HBA (ATTO card) for the client. Thirdly, we still offer access through single-user Write, or our old volume-level locking methods on fibre channel. On an 8XS you’ll squeeze about 50% more throughput out of the system this way, albeit without the Multi-user Write feature set.
There are many other important features that I’m leaving out, because this isn’t my forum, it’s yours. I’d appreciate the opportunity to tell you about those offline.

Still I would like to know what the bottleneck is for the QNAP 1279 with the 10GbE card. Currently we are editing with Firewire 800. This is about 75 MB/s and it works just fine for us. The only thing we want is to work together from one shared storage solution with 2/3 computers. So if we are able to work with 3 computers on the QNAP, with a rate of 75 MB/s per computer we will be satisfied. But I don’t know anyone who uses this new product, so I just want to know if this fits our situation.

That QNAP 1279 looks decently spec’d for what it is (doesn’t look very expandable though). It very well may perform to your needs if properly configured for Video IO. You could build out such a solution using the QNAP and our globalSAN iSCSI Initiator for OS X ($89/seat) and iSANmp SAN management software ($199/seat) to create a low cost, simple, and very effective volume sharing SAN.
While our software can be purchased stand alone to build your own solution, it can alternatively be had as part of our turnkey EVO systems, with no per seat license fees. This solution starts at $13,999 USD for 8TB RAW, 2 x GbE Ports. This system can be expanded up to 32 disk drives and has two open PCIe HBA slots for adding more IO including: 4 port GbE Cards, Single and Dual port 10GbE cards, and 4 or 8Gb Fibre Channel Cards.
Using ProRes HQ you should expect to see up to 3 streams of video over a single GbE port (again assuming the storage is configured properly and the client load is balanced). Our iSCSI Initiator and our iSCSI Targets (EVO and globalSAN Xtarget) also support multi-pathing over GbE so you can use both built-in GbE ports on a MacPro connected to two ports of GbE on an EVO and get 200MB/sec of bandwidth.
Furthermore our Xtarget iSCSI software can turn your existing FW800 direct attached drives into iSCSI SAN volumes for use with iSANmp as well. Whichever computer (or computers) you want acting as Xtarget Servers would connect to the FW800 drives and then bridge them over iSCSI to be connected to by clients with globalSAN Initiator and iSANmp.
