    Hi there,

I had a techy friend come over and help me use media manager to upres my feature-length doc. (I had been having problems using media manager myself.) I’m able to recapture my footage hi-res, but my text, graphics, and animation didn’t automatically adjust to the new online size/settings. They’re showing up tiny in the canvas.

They’re hi-res in my master clip area, but I can’t just lay them into my timeline without losing my edits.

My friend says I have to go into the motion tab and re-scale and undistort the text, etc., which will prove to be a TON of work, and I’ve got a Sundance deadline coming right at me. I don’t think I’ll make it.

I’ve used media manager before for smaller projects, and I don’t remember having to do this. Did he do something funky in media manager that I can change/get around? Or do I need to try media manager all over again? I’ve already recaptured a bunch of footage hi-res and don’t want to have to do it again.

Any help/guidance would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!
    Marisa

Try going back to a copy of the original sequence, delete all but the graphics footage and then try making an offline project. Change the set sequence to match your final online timeline and have another go. (Don’t forget to add handles so the animation has some extra)

In the new project, reconnect to the original files and the scaling should all be correct. Copy>Paste those bits into the sequence you are using to recapture and replace the wonky scaled shots.

    Thank you!!!

Well, it worked for the text and photos but not the animation. The animation isn’t THAT big of a deal because I can plop in the hi-res master clip into my upres’ed file without too much finessing. It was the text and photos I was worried about.

When you say “Copy>Paste those bits into the sequence you are using to recapture and replace the wonky scaled shots.” I think I have to copy and paste them individually into the upres’d sequence because if I try to paste the reconnected text/graphics sequence onto my upres’d sequence, I get a message saying that “the edit cannot be done because a transition would be cut or an item to one side of a transition would become too short.”

It’s still better than rescaling and distorting, so thank you!

Hm. I’m having trouble copying and pasting between the sequences.

It always pastes something else–one particular subtitle. The same thing no matter what I “copy.” Argh…

What is the difference between doing copying in media manager vs. creating offline in media manager? I think my tech friend chose “copy” and not “create offline.” I guess my question is, how is re-capturing from an offline clip different from re-capturing from an online clip?

[Marisa Miller Wolfson] “Hm. I’m having trouble copying and pasting between the sequences.”

That sounds weird. Might be time to trash preferences. One way to copy paste without clashing with transitions is to move the clips up to higher tracks before you copy. The paste should put them on the same higher tracks, above your original wonkies. That way you can copy the whole lot in one go and then sort the timeline later.

It is best to export as offline and change the sequence settings as that rescales all the motion and distort attributes correctly. As you are recapturing or reconnecting, it is the best approach. As everything becomes offline, you also won’t make a mistake and forget to recapture something in HD.

This is getting weirder by the second.

It actually WILL paste the correct text, but all the text clips are CALLED by the same text clip name now.

Ex: the subtitle shows up in the timeline as “as well as their nesting box” but when you play it in the canvas, it shows up as what it’s supposed to be: “from registered producers.”

It’s happening with ALL the subtitles: they’re called by the same subtitle name in the timeline but show up as the correct subtitle in the canvas.

OH! I just got your reply to my last note. Thanks for the explanation re: create offline vs. copy. Will do media manager again with “create offline.”

How do I trash my preferences? Which ones do I trash? (Sorry!)

    Thanks, as always!

Preference trashing and basic maintenance is something you will find comprehensively dealt with by searching this forum. It may even be a FAQ. Just search for trash pref and good advice will follow
