Purchase FCP now or wait for rumored new version?
Posted by Mike Plotnick on April 29, 2009 at 1:54 pmI am interested in learning FCP to ramp up my editing skills, but understand that Apple MAY be launching a brand-new version later in the year? Wondering if I should invest in software and training NOW or wait for the next-generation to begin???

April 29, 2009 at 3:06 pmWell, let me say this….
If you wait for the next rumored version, you’ll never buy anything. There will always be rumored version of ANY software.
I would suggest that you purchase now and upgrade later. Any amount of time that you wait will be lost time in learning AND any future productivity.

April 29, 2009 at 3:23 pmAlthough having the latest and greatest is well, great, waiting to learn based on rumors of an application being revised and released is not the best idea. As Wayne said, it might save you some money, but you would have lost valuable time learning the program. It can also cost you more money if it will only work at its top end with only the newest of Macs. FCP is a great program and learning it now will only help you when the next version comes along. If you look on the Cow you will see there are still users making money with Version 5 and some of those I spoke to at NAB were hoping for a hint of the next release at the FCPUG Supermeet and there were no rumors about the that rumor released that evening although it was a fun night.
Good luck with your decision,
Victor

April 29, 2009 at 3:37 pmWhen Apple comes out with the next update for FCS, it is believed to be a rewritten version since Mac OSX is dropping it’s support for Carbon (Final Cut Pro’s current code) and going to Cocoa (64bit). With that said even if it comes out at the WWDC (June) it will probably be fairly buggy at first.

That is so very true… Anytime you rewrite a program, it will take considerable time to work out all of the real use bugs. Testing at Apple is one thing, beta testing is another BUT getting the product in the real world allowing full time users to get their hands on it will really show any bugs in the programming.
After some time has passed, then I’d jump on the band wagon. But this is how our shop works because we depend solely on FCP to make us money.

April 29, 2009 at 3:49 pmThe cost of an upgrade is what, $400. Is delaying your education in editing worth $400? If you have the time to get going on it now, it will be worth the money. If you’re serious about getting into this, you need to really dig in. Worry about the upgrade later after you get a paying gig.

April 29, 2009 at 8:09 pmI especially like saying, “I’ll take this home with me tonight and play with it after dinner.”
What would that have cost 5 – 10+ years ago. Not to mention being able to make anything even remotely resembling what one would do at the post house AND be usable.

April 29, 2009 at 8:28 pmDo you want to start working today or wait until Apple releases something. Apple has been rumored to be releasing a new version for about 18 months now. You’re welcome to wait, but if you want to start working, better to learn sooner than later.
