Pulling together snipets on timeline
After importing my footage, throwing it onto the timeline and cutting out vast swathes, I’m left with lots of very short clips. Some are adjoined, and other have as much as 10 minutes between them on the time line. It’s very laborious to bring all these tiny clips together when they’re so small and so far apart. Is there a function to bring all the clips together, not so that they join end-to-end but so that they will be manageable on the timeline. Here is a screenshot of part of my timeline to give an idea of the situation:

I want to reduce the size of the large gaps (but not eliminate them entirely).

Hopefully you can see now that this wasn’t the best workflow. You should close the gaps as you make them. Alternately you can adopt a workflow where you start in the Trimmer and create SubClips of what you want to keep. Then arranging the SubClips how you want on the timeline. You can also use the Trimmer to just mark the sections you want and insert them into the timeline as you go without making SubClips.
If you want to only use the timeline then learn to use RippleEdit (Ctrl+L). It will close the gaps for you. You can use the Post-Ripple Edit by pressing the ‘F’ key after you have cut something out on a track.

The probklem with this is… how would Vegas know how much space you want to still leave? If you have Vegas Pro you can use a script to do this. There are script tools like Ultimate S Pro and Excalibur as well as free scripts.
