Hello! I have used Creative Cow for as long as I’ve been using the Adobe suite, but I’ve never made a post until now. I have a line of text that I’m trying to animate into a spiral (I know spirals are notoriously tricky in After Effects), essentially as thought it’s being pulled into an invisible whirlpool. So I need it to move in a spiral and shrink. That said, I’d also like to give it a bit of inertia, so the letters on the far right start to move and pull before the letters on the far left do. I recognize this is probably many questions in one, but I thought I’d pick the brains of this very clever community and see if you have thoughts on how I might go about that.

You can do this by animating text along a vector path that you’ve drawn as a spiral, and using Animation properties of the text controlled by range selectors as well as a separate one for the text tracking to control the size and spacing of the text as it follows the path. My quick and dirty test didn’t allow as much control as I’d like per-character, but it got the motion across without much fiddling.

See if this gets you close: Draw a path on the test layer as noted by Blaise then select it in the “Path” dropdown. Animate the “First Margin” to drive your text along the path. Add a scale animation property. The range selector “start” should animate from 100 to 0 as the text moves down. The “scale” property at the bottom of the animator should animate from 50 to 0.

Actually, you can have the first few letters pull the others if you use a position animator as the driver instead of “First Margin. Animate the range selector on that one from say 50 to 0.
