Puffy clouds of Doom
Posted by Peter Stenhouse on April 8, 2005 at 9:58 amGreetings. I was writing for advice on how to create some animated clouds to be integrated into a still background. I have been toying with some 3d software, mainly lightwave and not really getting the desired results. I was wondering if there was an easy way of doing this in AfterEffects, perhaps using the Particles there or some fractal noise or something. Or alternately if you could poin me in the direction of some Clouds.movs that would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your reply.

April 8, 2005 at 1:21 pmHi Peter
for ready made clouds check out
you could make your own in AE using a few layers of FN with soft masks and various transfer modes
or
check out digital anarchys Aurora Sky plug-in (looks great but the renders can be long)
this has been discussed on here lots of times, do a search of the archives to see in detail what the Guru’s have recomended

April 8, 2005 at 2:18 pmParticular does it well too. Best bet is if your looking at 3d look up volumetric studies, which is what I’ve been working on. I use 3dsmax so for that, 3rd party plugs like Pyrocluster and Afterburn are up for the job. They do fantastic Volumentrics with random noise and and can make any cloud situation. Other then that with a bit of practise you can pull it off with some displacement noise shaders and raytraced shadows that use white as a mix mode with an opacity setting (so when there is more on top of each other, it actually creates more density allowing less light to travel through). Anyways, hope some of that helps 🙂

April 8, 2005 at 10:00 pmYou could check out some of the tutorials right here on the cow! Jayse’s Surreal Clouds Without plug-ins, or Richard’s Flying Through Clouds.
I quite like Jayse’s.I believe Ayato’s got a tutorial as well… yes he does.
You can also do a forum search here, clouds have been discussed before. (Don’t forget to check the archives too)

April 9, 2005 at 8:14 amAre you talkin’ to me? I’ve never even heard of Invader Zim. I live in the UK, would that affect my hearing about this Zim thing? It sounds interesting.

April 10, 2005 at 1:05 amHaha, sorry talking to the original poster .. Zim always puts “DOOM” on the end of everything so I thought I might ask the question. As for Invader Zim, it’s an off beat cartoon made by Jhonen Vasquez (well, known for his twisted and dark sense of humour in comics) which got axed a few years back. It’s very intresting, if your into cartoons 😛 Anyways, enjoy…
