PrP CS6 audio tracks
OK asked this in the Basic Forum and no answer – real dummy questions here – switching over to PrP6 and having couple of audio challenges can’t answer.
1. we shoot split track XDCam. Track one usually ambient, track 2 lav. However frequently shoot both tracks with the one lav and have auto on track 1 and manual on track two – an old run and gun habit. The question – how do I get rid of a track. In FCP7 I’d unlink, delete one of the tracks, and the one I keep change to mono.
2. Right now trying to do an insert edit in A3 or 4. A1-2 voice and ambient, A3-4 for music. I hi-light the A3 and A4 tracks, but I only get an A beside track 5. Don’t want it in track 5. the audio to be inserted is music in stereo. Can not move the A to any other track. Get the circle do not enter sign. The tracks seemed to be locked. Can not do anything for example add fade in dissolve.
By the way seems very fast and will play anything – format – that I’ve thrown at it. But right now very frustrated. Have watched the 16 Creative Cow training videos. That discuss CS6 it but I am still not able to move the A to assign which track to insert the audio.

unfortunately it seems an ATI Radeon 5870 card.

OK more questions. Why can I NOT use the razor blade on a music track when the track is open? I get a red line through the razor blade. Just want to take the middle out of a piece of music. You have to close the audio track up to be able to trim or even move audio. Can’t see the waveforms so how do you know exactly where to cut or trim. Just a CS6 challenge?
Ideas highly appreciated.

To get rid of one track, you can right-click and hit “unlink” and then delete track. Or, with the pointer selected, you can ALT-CLICK the clip you want to kill and it will select just this clip, and you can delete it. If you want to delete a whole track, just right click on the track title and you’ll have the option to delete it.

If you’re trying to do an insert edit, and you have a source clip loaded in the source window, the # of audio tracks in the file will coorispond to the # of patch thingeys that come up on the far left side of your timeline. If you’re only getting one, perhaps the 2 tracks are being treated as one stereo track and it wants to patch to one stereo track? In that case, you might consider hilighting the clip in your project window and selecting CLIP>AUDIO>Breakout to Mono. This will extract both your mono tracks into the project window, and you can place them individually.
In regards to your razor blade question, that’s odd – you should be able to razor a clip anywhere just like FCP. No premiere weirdness… this may be your weirdness.

Thank you. I’m finding out that if the music in this case is Stereo, it requires a stereo track. So A1 – A4 are mono tracks forcing the stereo music to go to A5 as a stereo track. Different than my previous Avid and FCP7 thinking.
Still can not figure out how to do a cut in the A5 stereo music track if the track is open to see the wave forms. Same thing with trimming and moving. Wondering if there is a setting to check/uncheck somewhere.
Appreciate your taking the time to answer. I must use PrP6 for a new project starting Monday – against my better judgement – but client requires it. So long day today and tomorrow becoming an “expert”. -:)

Yes, that is true. However, CS6 also has “standard” audio tracks which will take any kind of audio. Somehow your sequence got set up with 4 mono tracks instead of for standard tracks.
just right click on an audio track and select “Add tracks….”
Add 4 standard tracks, move your audio down to these new tracks and delete the 4 original tracks.
Everything will work as you expect after that.
The not being able to razor the audio is very odd. I agree with Ryan, can we have a Screenshot?

I know what messed my timeline up initially. It was a FCP7 XML output. That is why my tracks are messed up according to PrP6 rules.
However just created a new project. Dropped only a stereo music track (aif) as a test. Still can’t edit using the razor blade when the track is opened up.

Found your problem. You’ve set that track to (or the default has been set to) show track volume. When the track is set to this mode the clips are locked. (I’ve no idea why… seems stupid to me.)
Right there in the center. That’s the keyframe display mode button. Change that to clip keyframes or clip volume and everything should work.

Brilliant.
I’ve been a one-man band basically all my life. The brilliant people on the Cow have saved my but numerous times. Funny the hours that I spent trying to figure this out and it was jut 1 click away.

In case you haven’t found it, the default keyframe display mode is in the general preferences.

Ok John – need to pick your brain one more time. If I bring in footage that is stereo, I have to modify every clip to make it split track mono? Or is there a way to set the timeline so A1 for example is always split track mono. What a pain if I have to modify every clip. I do realize and have started doing it group at a time, but total waste of energy.
Appreciate your thoughts.
