A while back I had received a large number of .mov wrapped h.264 files from someone not very familiar with rendering/encoding from mac to pc. To make them Vegas-friendly – and avoid losing any more quality than had already been lost – I converted all the files to huffyuv .avi’s.

I was surprised (and more than a little aggravated) to find that these new files had several problems of their own: large delays on realtime playback before Vegas responds (both starting and stopping…even returning to the program from another window), random drop-outs of sound during playback, and occasional random crashes. (I want to take a moment to clarify that these problems are definitely a result of these files, and not hardware/software related.)

I’ve tried grinding through the slow pacing, but I just don’t have the patience for it (it’s demoralizing to spend hours on cuts that clearly could be finished in half the time or less). So, I’m looking to re-encode them once more into a set of proxy files I can cut to until the time comes for a finished render. Any suggestions on an effective format?

Two sidenotes: 1. I am aware of the wonders of Cineform NeoScene, but would not be able to afford it before this edit is required. 2. Any solution that allows me to batch render would be ideal (180~ clips isn’t exactly a fun thing to babysit). In other words, I’m shooting for a quick and dirty solution if there’s one to be had.

    Thanks in advance,

    Aaron

Production assistant can batch them for you.
Gearshift can swap em’ out for you.
DV is a good proxy, fast render.
