ProRes422 codec for windows ?
Posted by Christopher Tay on April 27, 2007 at 8:27 amAnyone knows if there’s going to be a ProRes422 codec available for Windows so that we can open up clips exported in this format ? I understand that the lack of DVCProHD codec on the Windows was due to some licensing but since Apple developed the ProRes422, you think there’ll be a Windows codec available ? I sure hope so…

April 27, 2007 at 9:38 amI’ll risk getting my neck and say that it doesn’t look good. The ProRes codec looks to be part of the FCP install – if Apple were going to make it cross platform I would expect it to be rolled into Quicktime…
I would love to be wrong about this though!

April 27, 2007 at 10:41 amHi Simmie,
I see you’re still running Cinewave on your G4s. What version of FCP are you running with them ?
Yeah…I hope Apple will include that as part of the Quicktime codec list. If Apple wants ProRes422 to be widely adopted, they should do that.

April 27, 2007 at 10:59 amWe’re currently on FCP 5.1.2 – but I’ve been doing some testing and 5.1.4 is looking good so far. We’ll probably roll into fully up-to-date in a week or two…

April 27, 2007 at 11:40 amI very much doubt it. Apple wants to drive people to using its hardware and does not (necessarily) want to enable other peoples technology.
Additionally the Pixlet CODEC is not on Windows. ProRes will be seen as another reason for users to make the ‘switch’.

April 27, 2007 at 12:50 pmApple needs to start realizing that may facilities operate in a cross platform environment. Having a codec exclusive to Mac only severely limits the use of this QT file.
This is one area that Avid has Apple beat.

April 27, 2007 at 1:51 pmApple doesn’t care. It doesn’t want companies in cross-platform environments. It wants them on one platform, running its comparatively inexpensive software on its computers.
There are a number of codecs for QuickTime that are missing on Windows, not least of which is DVCPRO HD.
You want to run DVCPRO HD on FireWire, ProRes 422, Pixlet? Get a Mac. That’s the game plan.
All the best,
Tom

April 27, 2007 at 1:53 pmThis is a very valid issue. We often export video clips into our PC based workstations for Efx work. It will severly limit our workflow using ProRes422 in the future if the graphics artists cannot utilize the codec. We already run into this problem when using DVCPro50 as a codec and transferring clips for graphic work while in SD. It’s a fairly rare project that does not require some sort of additional graphical work to complete. The need to transcode clips from the original codec into some other PC-friendly variety is not a good solution for an efficient workflow.
Hopefully, Apple will realize that this industry does indeed function on all platforms and that they will wise up and include the codec in future issues of Quicktime for both flavors of PC. Or at lease, make it available in a Windows-friendly stand alone version at an additional fee? I guess we’ll see in a few weeks…

April 27, 2007 at 2:04 pmhi all
we have fcp for editing, but AE and Lightwave on a pC for efx.
we have been using the sheer codec for a massive chromakey job, and it has been good. pretty fast export times (dvcproHD to Sheer RGB 10 bit)
the down side is we have to composite the shots in fcp at dvcprohd which even using the sheer codec takes for ever to render. but you will always get that
there is another codec made by microcosm that also fills the bill.
we were using rayligh dvcprohd on the pc, but seemed to get better gamma and color translation using sheer.

April 27, 2007 at 2:04 pmWhat’s that effects work you’re doing on a PC? Apple’s answer is, why aren’t you doing it on a Mac? But the application doesn’t run on a Mac, you say. Use an application that does, Apple replies.
All the best,

April 27, 2007 at 2:20 pmThis statement is a gem: “Apple needs to start realizing….”.
It’s not exactly like they don’t have a clue!
Avid are seriously hurting as a direct result of Apple ‘realising’, ProRes or no ProRes.
