ProRes HQ only allows 2:2:2:4?
Posted by John Kaley on July 1, 2008 at 7:01 pmWhen I have ProRes HQ selected as the sequence compressor in a 23.976 timeline, FCP only allows 2:2:2:4 as the pulldown pattern. Standard Prores allows all pulldown patterns. I need ProRes HQ and 2:3:2:3! Possible?

With a Kona card.

July 1, 2008 at 7:27 pmThanks Jeremy. I forgot to mention I have a LHe. The Kona card is set to 2:3:2:3 but FCP will only allow 2:2:2:4 from the RT menu in the timeline.

July 1, 2008 at 8:07 pmPut your Easy setup using a 23.98 frame rate (ProRes HQ 23.98), then simply change the video output to 29.97 10bit in the view > video playback menu.

July 1, 2008 at 8:21 pmThanks Jeremy; It’s crazy-no worky. If I make the sequence Uncompressed or standard ProRes, all is well. With ProRes HQ I only get 2:2:2:4 playback.

July 1, 2008 at 8:49 pmWhere are you seeing this 2224 playback? Are you selecting it somewhere?
How fast is your machine?

July 1, 2008 at 9:09 pm2:2:2:4 is the only option in the RT menu for the sequence. If I select ProRes or Uncompressed as the sequence codec, I get all 3 pulldown options in the RT menu. Machine: MacPro 3.0Ghz Dual 6GB Ram
I need 3:2 pulldown added to my 23.976 sequence because it’s playing out to a client monitor (Panasonic TH-42PZ77U) which doesn’t support 24p native.
Are you able to playback ProRes HQ from your timeline with 2:3:2:3 selected in the RT menu??
Can you do quick test for me? Load the Sequence preset 1080p 23.98 ProRes HQ. Do you only see 2:2:2:4 as the pulldown pattern in the RT menu?
Thanks for your help!

July 1, 2008 at 10:08 pmOn my Kona3 I can, yes, but I think you’re setup improperly as the KOna handles pulldown, not FCP.
What you need to do is make sure your timeline is 23.98 and your output on the Kona card is 1080i29.97 10 bit from the view video playback menu.
Please follow these instructions:
1) Put your card in 23.98 mode by selecting the AJA Kona LHe ProResHQ 23.98 easy setup.
2) Go to View > VIew Playback and change it from 1080sf23.98 to 1080i29.97.
3) Make sure you have 2:3 pulldown selected in the Kona control panel under the ‘codec’ tab.
4) Hit play.
Please follow these exactly.

I’m not entirely sure of that…I can select different pulldown patterns from the RT menu and easily see the differences on the Panasonic plasma even with the Kona set at 2:3:3:2.
Your instructions were very precise and clear, but it’s not happening for me. For now I’m using Uncompressed as my sequence compressor and it’s working fine; clean 3:2 pulldown. ProRes HQ won’t work for me. Thanks for your help Jeremy!

July 1, 2008 at 10:55 pmPerhaps the Kona LHe can’t do this? I don’t know. Are you sure your timeline is 23.98?
Hit up AJA support and they’ll be able to tell you for sure. Sorry for the wild goose chase, but it works with a Kona3 and the ioHD.

July 1, 2008 at 11:16 pmThe panasonic plasma should accept 24p video no problem.
how are you connected to it?
HDMI should work.
