  • prores gone after new installation of FCS2

Posted by Matthias Kastl on August 20, 2010 at 10:24 am

    Hi,

got a weird problem, after deleting everything on my IMAC and installing again FCS2 Final Cut is not able to capture in ProRes (will not show me the codec), although i can export ProRes via compressor and also create new sequences with that codec. but capturing is not possible anymore.

here what happened exactly: got recently some problems with FCS2 on my Imac (2,8 GHZ, 4GB RAM, 10.5.8) as compressor would not work (could send stuff to compressor but it would process forever) and capturing something as ProRes would lead to a Kernel panic. So i decided to do a clean sweep, delete everything and install leopard and Final Cut Studio 2 again. Now compressor works fine but it won’t show me the ProRes Codec in the capture options for some reason. However, if I create a new sequence or want to export a film it shows me the codec in final cut (also can import and work with prores-files without a problem), just not in the capture options. what the hell is happening here? tried to install Final Cut now several times, always the same problem (also deleted everything again and installed leopard again, also tried snow leopard). anybody an idea, am really confused about this…

    thanks

Have you trashed prefs & repaired permissions? Also, run Disk Warrior.

thanks for the answer. trashing prefs and repairing permissions didn’t help, DiskWarrior costs around 100 bucks, thats quite a lot for “trying”, is there any other alternative? i also found now a workaround, although it is still obvious that something is wrong.

As I said, when I go to “Easy Setup” there is no ProRes-Codec to be seen. However, if I go to Audio/Video Settings apple ProRes is an option at Capture Preset. So here I can create my own setting with ProRes that will work. Still, there is obviously something wrong as ProRes should show up at Easy Setuo too, so I would still prefer to find a solution, if anybody has any ideas….

    thanks

I’ve no more ideas. I know that I/O devices like the Kona add their own Easy Setups when they’re installed. I don’t know what Easy Setups are installed just by FCP as they are all mixed together on my system. I recall that during installation there was an option for installing additional Easy Setups. However, the fact you’re seeing ProRes in the other menus is strange. Making your own capture preset is good. I use my own Custom Easy Setups all the time for specific codecs/formats I work with.

    Matthias,

I believe your issue is more that your machine cannot handle ProRes for capture and process over a single FW connection.

On an Imac you really only have enough CPU to handle the LT or Proxy versions safely. IMHO the Imac’s are just not really powerful enough to handle more than DV compressed content easily.

    hi,

first thanks for your answers john and gary.

@gary: about my IMAC not being able to handle ProRes, it worked perfect for more than a year, so why should there suddenly be a problem? also, if I use my own setting for prores I have no problem capturing it (tested it, worked fine). so there must be another explanation, why it does not show prores in my easy setup, or?

thanks again for your help guys…

    >>so there must be another explanation, why it does not show prores in my easy setup,<< Remember, your software is newer than the OS you are running so during the re-install it is possible that elements from previous upgrades, that allowed you to handle PR content in your timelines, were not included as part of the later software verisons or that the installer did not load some components due to the age of your OS. I can't be sure, but it is possible. gary adcock Studio37 Post and Production Workflow Consultant Production and Post Stereographer Chicago, IL https://blogs.creativecow.net/24640

just a thought: have you tried creating a new user account?

    then:

“DiskWarrior costs around 100 bucks, thats quite a lot for “trying”

I don’t think it would help with your problem (but could be wrong) but in any case DW is a software to have in any professional toolbox. It has saved me several times more than its cost me.

Also, have a look at digital rebelion’s software. Some is free and helps in running a clean fcp (Pref Manager) and they also have some fcp centric diagnostic software.

    hope this helps,

    Patrice

thanks for the answer patrice, tried what you said with the new user account, no difference. but thanks for the advice and the information regarding the software tools…
