ProRes 4444 signal is YUV-10bit through KONA 3

Is Apple ProRes 4444 really an RGB codec?
Using:
Mac Pro 8 core
8 GB ram
FCP 7.0
Kona 3 v7.0Using easy setup Kona 3 1080sf23.98 Apple ProRes 4444 I captured Dual link from HDcamSR and Kona 3 frame buffer was seeing a “RGB 10-bit” signal on input.
Now when I playback my sequence(rendering set to RGB) or edit to tape, kona 3 frame buffer is seeing a “YUV 10-bit” signal.
This is also true when using the AJA TV, I open a Apple ProRes4444 QT and the frame buffer sees YUV. I open a QT using the AJA RGB 10bit codec, frame buffer shows RGB signal.
I know I am missing something. Has anyone else had this issue?

Prores in all his flavors is YUV (Y’CbCr).
No problem for FC processing in 10b YUV/The 10b RGB codec that you may have available is the AJA 10b RGB.
You may cut this footage in FC, but not process it. FC can not render in 10b RGB.

Ok, according to FCP 7 documentation,
The Apple ProRes format supports the following digital video signals:
RGB
4:2:2 Y′CBCR
4:4:4 Y′CBCRAnd yes, I was testing using AJA 10 bit RGB codec footage. FCP cannot render in RGB 10 bit? Then why when I do render video using the AJA RGB codec does the Kona 3 see a 10-b RGB signal in the frame buffer?
Where is this information that FC cannot render in RGB 10 bit come from, the manual?

October 2, 2009 at 3:36 amProRes 4444 can be either RGB or YUV. If you only have YUV, open up your ,b>Audio Visual Preferences, click on the Capture Settings tab, make a duplicate of the capture setting and change the digitizer from YUV to RGB.

You are right Arnie. The 444 can be both YUB and RGB.

AJA 10b RGB is Uncompress. Heavy weight. I think that you need two channels HD/SD-SDI to capture that.[Rudy Lopez] “FCP cannot render in RGB 10 bit?”
Unless have been implemented in FC 7, no. Just have a look to the render options in a any Sequence Settings. You have 8 and “High Precision” (32b Floating Point) YUV rendering options. For RGB you have only 8b.In FC you can only cut the footage. If you render it will be crunched to 8b.

Apple ProRes 4444 Alpha Channel Support
In addition to supporting Y’CBCR or RGB 4:4:4 pixel data, the new Apple ProRes 4444
codec type optionally supports an alpha channel. The sampling nomenclature for
such Y’CBCRA or RGBA images is 4:4:4:4, to indicate that for each pixel location, there
is an alpha – or A – value in addition to the three Y’CBCR or RGB values. An alpha
value specifies the proportion of its associated RGB or Y’CBCR pixel that should be
blended with the pixel at the corresponding location of a background image, creating

I am sure that this was a capture error but lets look at a couple of things first.
are you using the 7.0 driver from AJA?
Did you update the firmware on the K3 when you installed the 7.0 driver (the 6.5driver’s easy setup to capture ProRes 444 at 1080 23.98 was incorrect)Did you select the default ProRes 4444 setting (which is YCrCb) or did you create an RGB setting based on those setups.
the Incoming RGB signal does not change the capture settings to RGB on the fly- you need to do it manually.

You do not work with Dual Link capture and I do not believe that you have a K3 card how much assistance can you be to someone asking a technical question that you have never run across.
Why consistently jump in on subjects you are not versed in?

No yet. Hopefully by the end of the year.

I forgot you are the only person around qualified to talk about 444 workflow.
