ProRes 422(HQ) for Online?
I just finished a project…the dailies were provided to me as 422(HQ) and that’s the timeline I’ve been working on.
The client wants an HD finish. Is 422(HQ) technically considered SD or HD? Would there be any difference or benefit from exporting in an HD format? As far as I can tell, if I’m starting with 422(HQ) I might as well finish with that as well. Am I right?
FYI, most of this will be living on the web. There’s a chance one spot might air and that’s why they want an HD version.

ProResHQ can be an SD format, but more likely HD. What’s the dimension of the frame? if it’s 1920×1080 pixels, you’ve got HD.
also it’s a great finishing codec for most everyday HD work. I wouldn’t blink twice about finishing in ProResHQ in all but the most demanding situations.

It can be either so it wholly depends on the frame size that was given to you and the original footage

Yes, ProResHQ is a high quality 10 bit 4:2:2 codec. It’s the best besides uncompressed.

ProRes HQ should only be used for HD files larger than 1080i.
For all other uses, ProRes should be used.
The codec (ProRes and ProRes HQ) is 10bit regardless of whether it’s used in SD or HD.
There have been so many threads about this in recent weeks, you can learn everything you ever wanted to know about ProRes in about 5 minutes using the Search function in the forum.
