  • ProRes 422 video transitions won’t work

Posted by Peter Dunphy on January 18, 2009 at 12:45 pm

    Hi Guys

With ProRes 422 I can perform transitions on audio (dissolves etc) but not on the video clips.

I have a sequence in my FCP timeline in ProRes 422 50i PAL (followed the procedure to get it from HD video here: https://edu.moviola.com/hdv_prores#new_easysetups)

Now I have it in my timeline, I can perform transitions on audio (dissolves etc) but not on the video clips.

I’ve tried trashing my prefs and restarted a few times and verified and repaired system permissions to no avail.

I have an iMac with 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 4GB RAM.

I use an external drive as my scratch disk.

When highlighting the ‘join’ between clips and trying to add the transition I’m getting the error message ‘insufficient content for edit’ despite each of the clips being over 10 seconds long and the dissolve transition only being one second. This occurs throughout the 10 min sequence. I’ve tried copying the clips into fresh sequences and a fresh project, but no joy I’m afraid.

UPDATE: I’ve been able to apply only a couple of transitions to a couple of short clips at the end of the sequence, but still am unable to apply transitions to the majority of the sequence. Could this be a problem with ProRes 422 perhaps?

    Any suggestions genuinely appreciated.

    Peter

You’re a gentleman John, thanks very much will check it out now.

I’ve double-checked I have more than sufficient handles on my clips (30 secs – 1 minute on each side for a simple cross dissolve one second transition).

Looks like it’s Final Cut being funky for me. I can manually fade using the opacity level in the meantime.

Really weird I can’t do normal transitions though – I’ve edited 6 projects in FCP prior to this.

I’ve had instances where I had plenty of handle, but the transition appeared as a one frame transition. Almost didn’t see the transition the first time this happened. I double-click the transition, drag it some frames to the right, and increase the duration. Then it’s visible and can be further adjusted as needed.

Thanks again for your suggestions John.

I’ve zoomed in completely and tried again but sadly no transition has been applied :o( Not even a frame.

Any other suggestions more than welcome.

    All the best

Make a cut line 5 seconds in to your 10 second clip. Can you put a transition there?

This si jsut a test to make sure it’s working. It will dissolve from/to the same clip.

    Hi Jeremy

Yes, that seemed to work on a 10 sec clip in a new sequence. Thanks so much for your input.

Perhaps I should copy each of the clips individually into a new sequence one after another and perform the transitions as I go?

Tried pasting just two of the clips from the start of the sequence, one after another, but couldn’t perform the transition :o(

It seems to perform transitions okay when I freshly use the blade halfway through a clip, like you suggested…but it won’t do the transitions between the existing clips, which is kind of where I need them :o/
