Proper way to layer effects so they only affect a chosen area?
I just learned to use the basics of this program two days ago to make a parody of sorts of this video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQKGUgOfD8U
But I’m having trouble getting that layered tv footage effect. I hand-drew the artwork and kept some empty space so that it’d be transparent where it needs to be, but the empty space gets filled up by video static and won’t change if I layer a video under it.At the same time any stock video I add doesn’t really show as the footage clip, even when it’s by its own without another clip/track over it. Just more grainy static.
It worked when I had the effect bypass button on, but I had to turn it off to make sure some effects worked.
I then tried to make a ‘gray’ layer with the areas where the footage is supposed to be and see if I could overlay it somehow, but that didn’t fix the static either.
This is really bugging me as it’s the only thing standing in my way from finishing the video. Anyone know of a way to get the effect from the original video?

It looks to me like this can be accomplished with 3 layers. The bottom track should have your static video playing. The middle track should have your artwork (which is very nicely drawn btw) saved as an PNG file with Transparency! Once you drop that into Vegas Pro you may have to right-click and set the Alpha Channel to straight. This will allow the transparent parts of your drawing to show the video beneath. Then the top track is your text.

Thank you for responding (and the compliment). In the time since I posted this I somehow got it to work by adding a black background layer at the very bottom and masking the layers with the static footage under the artwork. No idea why it decided to work now when I tried that before but I’m not complaining lol.
It’s not pictured but the text is layered above the artwork. I think I ended up doing what you suggested, but what do you mean by setting it to ‘straight’?

Vegas Pro doesn’t always detect that there is an alpha channel in the media and sometimes you need to right-click on the media and select Properties | Media and go to the Alpha Channel drop down and set it to something other than “None”. The first one you should always try is Straight (unmatted) unless you know that the alpha channel has been pre-multiplied, and if so, use one of those settings.

Ohh, I see! Thank you, I will keep that in mind if I ever have a layering problem. I did notice some glitches that were fixed when I opened/reopened the program, but this might save me the trouble in the future.
