Activity Forums VEGAS Pro Projection flicker / rendering settings

  • Projection flicker / rendering settings

I recently posted a question on the ‘live stage events’ forum here on the COW, and a response has led me to wonder if there is anything I should be doing when rendering videos.

    To summarise the issue:

“I recently did a three-screen/projector show using vegas-rendered footage playing on qlab into a matrox 3-head. The images projected were a mixture of live footage and still images. Everything worked fine in the show, but when I saw the DVD of the show I noticed flicker on all the screens regardless of whether I was displaying still images or video. The still images were png files displayed directly by qlab and the videos were all .mp4 rendered in vegas in progressive mode and displayed in qlab.”

A response indicated it could be related to camera shutter rate, and I am going to investigate this. However, this lead me to think about rendering settings, and whether there was anything I could do to try am minimise the issue.

When rendering video, are there specific settings that I should consider? My video tends to be a combination of action and still images (usually pngs or jpgs). During the show there is no indication of flicker – only on the footage of the show.

    Tanks for any suggestions.

If you are recording projected images and see a flicker it is due to the fact that the camera and projector will never be in sync unless you are physically syncing them to a common external source. The best you can do is set the camera shutter to be faster than the projector playback frame rate but even then you may see waves of light move down the screen. This has nothing to do with render settings.

    John,

Thank you for the clear answer.

Is it possible to synchronise the camera recording to the projector playback rate? Would anybody have any suggestions on where to even start researhing this topic?

    Thank you.
