  • Project on FCP -output what format to import to Vegas 9?

Posted by Tony Derosa-grund on September 10, 2010 at 5:51 pm

    Hi,

Not an FCP person. Have a directors cut of an indie film which is now on FCP 7 as a ProRes.

On a short deadline and need to re-cut the director’s cut in Vegas 9. What is the best output format to transit the project from FCP to ingest into V9 that will keep the highest HD quality?

    Thanks.

Vegas Pro 9 (make sure you have the latest version of both it and QuickTime) should be able to read a ProRes file.

No. ProRes is from the family of Apple Intermediary Codecs that are just a codec/format for use with FCP only.

Have verified this by trying to play ProRes files on different PC machines with both the latest version of QT and QT PRO. ProRes files don’t play/work in any PC environment, as FCP is not present. (ProRes will play on a MAC in QT if FCP is also present within the computing environment, so QT on a PC is not the answer.

Tony, I’m confused because a number of posters on here and other Vegas forums have confirmed that they have been able to import ProRes files into Vegas for subsequent editing.

I forgot to mention that, if that doesn’t work, try installing the free Avid DNxHD codec on both machines and rendering to that from FCP.

What about outputting as XDCAM HD 1080i 60 from from FCP as MXF or MPG …will Vegas play nice with either of those ( have Sony xdcam plug in on FCP)

…or anyone like using Cineform as an intermediary file format for going from FCP to Vegas?

ProRes works great on the pc. But you can only read it you cannot create a prores file. You can download the plug in for quicktime at the apple website go to
