Hello. I am trying to understand how to correctly organize my project files in FCP. I have an iMac with one internal drive, and a LaCie Raid 5 connected via firewire. In researching posts online, the consensus seems to be that it is best to keep only the FCP project file on the system drive, and all the other capture scratch (Final Cut Pro Documents folder) media on an external drive. Would this be best in my case, since I am connected to my external drive with firewire? Would that be fast enough to use while editing a project? Since I don’t have e-Sata, I guess I just assumed that it would be too slow. Any opinions?

Firewire (ext.) drive is fast enough for editing SD material and even some HD footage. You’ll be fine. In the FCP settings, choose the system drive for the auto backups of the Proj. files.
The Firwire drive for the capture scratch.
