When working on a project, I keep all my media and my project file on an external fw drive. I’ve had no problems thus far. Yesterday, I heard through the grapevine that it’s better to keep your project file on the same drive as FCP. Supposedly, you’ll have less problems. This is the first time I’ve ever heard this. Can anyone confirm?

    I’m using FCP 4.5.

    Thanks,

    PK

Yes. Keep your project file on the main system drive, and your media on a separate drive. It is also VERY advisable to back up your project to another drive (such as the media drive) in case your project becomes corrupt or your HD get damaged. This way, if one drive fails, then you have the project backed up on another.

But true. The project file should reside on the main drive. You don’t HAVE to if you don’t want to…there are no issues with keeping it on your external as well. The most important thing is the back up…

Thanks Shane. From reading your post, I do get a little bit of conflicting advice. Forgetting the issue of backing up the file which I do, is it better to keep the project file on the main drive? You seem to say that there are no issues to have it on the external.

It really doesn’t matter. Either one works fine.
