Production workflow/ways of working with music producer
Hi – I’ve recently started working with a friend who is a musician that was up for composing music to my films. I’ve always previously used production music, so while this is exciting it also presents some new issues.
In terms of the creative process it’s all working nicely. I go through the rushes and figure out the feel I’m looking for – then think about some commercial tracks that would work. I send these over to him along with the notes for what I like from each track and why. He then either adapts something he’s already made, or starts afresh. Once that’s been sent over I do a rough cut and lay down the track. From here I get an idea of what we need to change…and this is where it starts to get complicated.
We’re both Mac users, but we don’t share the same software. I edit on Premiere while he composes on Logic X. We live in different cities, so we can’t get together that often so we both go back and forth remotely. So I email requests, amendment’s and questions – he does some work then sends it back. Ideally it’d be great to have a shared workspace to which we could both contribute – and most importantly he could also see how the track works with the pictures on a timeline, rather than just through video playback.
The obvious answer is for him to get Adobe products – but I was wondering if anyone else had done something similar and found a solution?

I use FCPX/Premiere/Avid and soon Resolve for NLEs.
I have worked with professionals using Pro Tools (old and new), Logic, Cubase and even Audition.
The only issues I’ve run into are mostly stupid ones.
From my experience, Premiere/Avid has been the easiest to get into Pro Tools.
For the other DAWs, def no issues from FCPX.
One day, I would like to try it all in one single app (Resolve).
