WE are shooting a documentary using primarily using Sony Z1u and Sony FX1 cameras. We are shooting in HDV but don’t want to edit that way for obvious reasons. We are can capture all the material using a Kona LH card. I’ve tried this using the component out of the camera and the footage looks stunning. Problem is that the only way I seem to be able to capture this through the Kona Card is using a 1080 29.97 , 8 or 10 bit capture format. But since these files are huge I would rather not do that because of the cost of storage. WE probably will end up with 50 or more hours of material.

I thought that I remembered that you could use the component out of the camera to capture and simultaneously convert the media to just about any HD format you wanted to use. I’m having trouble understanding how I might be able to do that. My ultimate destination format would be to go to a DVCProHD format when I capture. We are pretty flexible here because we have not yet started the editing process. The destination will be a broadcast documentary and will be published to an SD DVD as well It is possible that we may eventually publish to BluRay as well.

What is the best way to capture this in HD (but avoiding HDV) through the Kona LH card for our purposes?

We will be working using FCP6 on a non-INtel MAC.

Brilliance and stellar advice will be appreciated.

You can transcode the analog outs to anything with the Lh card, so just set it’s control panel to capture in the format of your choice. Keep the frame rates the same…

BUT if you were to go into intel land you could capture as ProRes… way better than DVCPROHD…
