My understanding is that a 20″ production monitor should not be on a workstation desk — it needs to be placed farther back for proper viewing.

For a desk, a 14″ production monitor is the correct size…so this would be a consideration.

Well I just finished a series for the Discovery Channel that was graded and on-lined on a 20″ sitting right next to the cinema displays.
No problems what so ever, and the larger image is a benefit. You’ll find a 14 or 15 is significantly cheaper, but if you can afford it go for
a 17″ at least, remembering that if your like us here in Oz almost everything nowadays is edited in 16:9 so you are effectively reducing the
image size on the CRT by a fair percentage.

    My 2 cents.

Thanks Sean, I had thought about a 14″, but having used one of those in a broadcast situation with it right in front of me I felt that it was just too small and one of the coporate edit suites that I frequent has one of these 20″ bad boys in both of their suites and they are easy to see from the desk or accross the room. I see this as a benefit.

As for 16:9, I am afraid that the majority of our work will be 4:3 for the distant future. In education we tend to lag behind the rest of the world for a bit. Sad but true.

    Thanks again
