I recently had several 8mm Kodachrome family home movies converted to HD. The company that did the conversion sent them to me as huge .avi files on an external hard drive. The 1G to 2G files run fine on Windows Media Player.
After breaking one of the .avi files into 9-10 minute sequences, the sequences lock up when viewed in the program monitor. Several attempts using new projects result in same.
I use updated Premiere Pro CS4 running on a Dell Studio desktop w 12G ram, 64 bit Win 7.
Do I need to convert the .avi files to another format or make them smaller before importing into Premiere?

It’s likely they they provided you with uncompressed files, and your lock up is mostly because the drive isn’t fast enough to keep up with the data rate. You can batch render them to DV avi and replace the files with the HD versions in the project panel when you are done editing.

Thanks Vince. I think I understand and will give it a try.
