  • Problems with Extend Edit and Dissolves

Posted by Russell Lasson on July 22, 2008 at 7:32 pm

I’m sick of this one. If I try to use the extend edit command (E) on a clip that has a dissolve, it changes the dissolve to be just one frame instead of keeping it the length that it was originally.

I spend so much time adjusting dissolves that I like when I have to extend the end of the clip for some reason. It’s driving me crazy.

If I just choose end of the clip and type in a number, it will extend it with out change the dissolve so I know that it can be done.

Is this a common problem for other people?

    Thanks!

That’s because by rolling the edit you’ve moved the edit point to where there is not sufficient handles to create the overlap. You might be able to keep the transition by changing the transition alignment to start or end on edit.

    All the best,

[Tom Wolsky] “you’ve moved the edit point to where there is not sufficient handles to create the overlap.”

That’s not the case. I’ve even tested it with a slug and it does the same thing. Are you not having that problem?

It works for me. With video and with a slug.

So after playing with it some more on other systems, it turns out that only the edit systems that are connected to our SAN are having the problem. My laptop is fine. So where do I go from here?

    Ahhh!!!!!

I don’t see why connecting it to a SAN would have a problem for slug, which is internal to the project file. Unless the project file is in a SAN. Are you using FC Server? Does the problem occur with the roll tool?

Just wondering if the original poster ever found a solution to this problem. I’m having the same issue. I’ve searched everywhere and can’t figure out why FCP does this. I have plenty of handle on both sides of my media but whenever I do and extend edit, the transition length doesn’t hold and turns into a one frame dissolve. I’ve also noticed that it’s not possible to click and drag dissolves to other tracks [as a very fast way of duplicating/copying transitions to other tracks] via option + click + drag. The result is the same: a one frame dissolve.

Both of these issues are resolved by trashing prefs but they only stick for so long before I start seeing them again. Does anybody know what gives here? Why does it seem that only a few FCP users experience this problem?

That same annoying problem is still around, two and a half years on. I hate you, Final Crap Pro!
